Prof Epps from Numb3rs is a wonderful example.  You can also cite examples like Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park and Bernard Quatermass as others or even Evelyn Trimble from Casino Royale (the original).

As for Manning learning Pure Maths for Accountancy, that's a civil service approach all-over (going into obsessive detail for the basics).  A shame he was sent in against Charlemagne (which is another civil service approach - using a specialist as a generalist or out-of-context).  He will be missed.

PM received and reply given.

there needs to be some way of making pure maths more specified, ie choose a specialisation in it: system modeling/Quantum maths/mechanics(as in the maths of newtonian physics)/eqation solving
then add 3 months to learn a new specialisation :/
makes it more of a usefull skill
ie: ref iv got system modeling, can i see any patterns occuring and predict outcomes? (ian malcom Razz)

i dunno, just throwing ideas into the pot

i want the skill in the end, but its not top off my priorities.. event though realisticly, it should be, me being crazy scientist extraordinare

will x

AS a point form the last event  someone with pure maths could have enumerated the exact amount of "washers" in the box without having to count them all. (the derren brown trick)

Actually dont specialise pure maths, because the skill is so specialised and so rarely used that most refs will except that you are a specialist in system modeling/Quantum maths/mechanics(as in the maths of newtonian physics)/eqation solving because frankly as human beings in the field most refs are not.

Gain the benefit of ref ignorance.

That works with a lot of skills Smile  It is all well and good having the skill in writing, but a lot can be gained by having the right props, and a bit of background knowledge, and tonnes of imagination Smile
