I shall also be glued to Sky on Tuesday evening. It will be nice to see the new series from the start, I had to catch up on the previous two.

I didn't like it at all... Carlysle is good but that's pretty much it... it's so Voyager.

OK, When's it on? Is it being repeated? I'm out tomorrow night.

Tomorrow night on Sky 1, double bill starting at 8pm as it's the first week. I would guess it is repeated on Sky 2 like the other Sky 1 blockbusters.

...and probably several times.
I must say, the premise does sound like Voyager. Then again, all the SG premises sounded like Star Trek to me.

SAVED It's repeated on Wednesday at 9.00pm. I can go out for Chris' birthday tonight & still catch the show!

Jury still out at the moment having watched 1 and a little bit hours.
Certainly seems interesting though so I'll wait and see.

Has bits of Voyager, BSG, but seems to work well so far.
Carlyle makes a good Ahab.

I have to admit that I'm intrigued to see where and how they take the character of Rush forwards. From what I have read of the series (mainly Wikipedia but other bits by googling 'Nicholas Rush') they are keen to play on the machiavellian nature of the character.
Given that I would love to play a character with this sort of trait I'm keen to see the sort of things they have him do, so I can guage if it is possible to do similar within a game environment (not specifically thinking of Stargate here BTW!!)
In a similar way I think the example of Dr Rodney McKay is a good example of how to play a character that is very very intelligent and slightly 'antisocial' with it without being completely at odds with those around him.
Of course, chances are it would be impossible to play as machiavellian without massive allowances from the refs/crew, and would very well set the offending character against the rest of the party.
Back on topic, I will give it slightly longer to see if it grows on me...

Much the same for me really will see how it plans out. One concern is that they will have "planet of the week" episodes that they will never revisit as the ship conotinues moving onwards so the only progrression will be the people on the ship which is a limited pool.

They (being the Powers That Be) have said that they intend to focus more on the characters in the programme. That said I seem to recall every new TV show has someone sometime waffling on about how its all 'character driven'.

I enjoyed the first two episodes but then I'll watch anything that's even close to sci-fi and the Stargate genre is one of my favourites. I think it's got a lot of potential.

On the plus side (for me anyway) I saw people there in Desert Tiger stripe!

Yeah, it's good to know that even on TV there are people with no taste in camo too
I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot. Whilst the moody strings are a little bit too BSG for words, I mainly like the fact that they have clearly been inspired by our LRP system.
Rush is the ultimate plot hog, whilst "angry brig bloke" is any gun bunny who refuses to take orders. That coupled with miltary characters pleading with civies to "move to the side" after they come through the Stargate and some major league cheasy angst means that it is SEF: the tv series.

Spoiler - highlight to read
given the under equipped nature of the mission and having to visit lots of worlds to solve the problem they get on arrival.
yup sef the tv series

Machiavellian takes patience and charisma, ref and crew involvement is not required. Done right, the other characters, even the other players, won't know what's going on.
Of course, done badly it' can be hilarious. The I'm-SOOO-Machiavellian player is a sad and ridiculous feature of most LRP systems.

Just watched the first ep. Seemed surprisingly good, at least from the standpoint that all the previous stuff after the movie left me cold. Perhaps helped that over lunch today, a friend pointed out that it has at least as much in common with Space: 1999 as it does with Voyager.

Erm... right. Yes, everyone are good guys aren't they.

Sorry dan,
I don't understand your question.
What I am saying is that to my mind playing a scheming character would need allowances from the refs/crew. I'm not sure that it could be done 'freehand' (as it where - I can't think of the suitable word, sorry).
That siad other people think it might be possible. Perhaps its more a self referential point that I personally coul not do it? I'm not sure.
Its a topic that I'm more than happy to talk through further, and indeed to have my mind changed for me.
Hope that helps.

Powerplays are about bluff. If you are going to play a private agenda, then you will have to do the stuff that makes it work. Plot, rules and ref calls can't really help where raw charisma is required.
Last year, I played in a Vampire LRP. One player built her character to have a kind of awe-inspiring aura power. Unfortunately, she was five-foot-nothing, painfully shy, wore black and and tended to stand in the corner out of the light. She also had a very quiet voice. Despite everyone's best efforts to support her game, she became wallpaper within half an hour, and had no up-time impact after that. On paper, she had it all. But she couldn't play shat she had.
Some things have to come from the player. Charisma is one of them.

Oh yeah - undoubtedly.
What I guess I'm saying is that even if its done well, and with charisma, I don't think it would be supported by players and that it would only come forward by the refs allowing it to intrude on the main campaign.
Looking at it this is clearly less about Stargate, and Stargate LRP in general and much much more about the games/systems I have played in previously. Thus I have no doubt that if someone started playing to a personal/private agenda then this would be acted/reacted to accordingly.
As per the question regards to Sexual Orientation I asked ages ago this has actually got very little to do with the Stargate game but rather with other systems I'm involved in.
This makes very little sense as I read it. Suffice to say that I'm more commenting about experiences in other games when I have seen people trying to play to another agenda and either being flat ignored or jumped upon from a great height. Just ignore me!!
Regards SGU, I'm looking forward to seeing where they take Carlyle's character in particular with a view to seeing how they take a potentially 'bad guy' character and make him fit with a team of good guys, and how they make him likeable/watchable.
Some more characterisation of the others would be nice too!

SGLRP has plenty of private agendas, turf wars, squabbles and witchhunts, pretty much since day one in fact
At the moment, there are too many stereotypes in the show. The influences are pretty clear-cut But I love the visual identity of the ship interiors.

Well episode three has gone and I really enjoyed it.
Nice to see they kept some of the SG humour in the script and the inter party squabbling was far to familiar!
Lt Tamara Johanson will be fun to watch, but I'm biased.

Is it my imagination or does Franklin (the chap with the portable dialer) strike a startling resemblance to one of our SGers?

Ah, it wasn't just me then. Maybe he's just lucky.

A considerably younger version maybe

The resemblance is definately there. Now you can go to fanfests holding a PSP as a prop and give autographs
