Riot Shield?

I'm guessing this isn't exactly considered LRP safe?

Richard Tyler

I know somone who took one to a post apocalyptic lrp event. It certainly shredded a few swords. I'd say a definate no
Freeman

Bugger.
shan't put a bid on then (as my only use for it would be LRP)
Thanks for the info tho.
Richard Tyler

If your prepared to pad the edges with thin pipelagging or the like it would be safe enough, just not as is
Freeman

Is that all it'd take?
Doesn't it need to be all flimsy and bendable?
Aaron

The one that did the shredding wasn't padded.
I personally would be more than happy with that if you padded and maybe added some fabric to the padding to stop in breaking off and looking like pipe lagging

Then again what do I know, I helped choke slam someone thru a "Lrp safe" table Very Happy
Freeman

you DID?!
That sound fun.
Fenric

Yup - he did... It's amazing what can be made safe for Shards apparantly.
Doc Benton

i have acess to a 4" uk army one (new stile)

is say if you bust out the gaffa and the pipe ligging would be safe.

thay do not shatter thay will just brake (never seen it done in a full or riot in NI so woild be fine for larp.

there kida not very nice if you side slam or foot ram with them but hay it a blody riot sheld!

not that ia did aney of the above ... ever... well may be once... well i was told to go for rapid dispuarsal Twisted Evil
The Kibble

I remember when shield were wooden with no lagging. I think if it is safe or not will depend on the system.

Personally I think with a little work riot shields like that would be fine in stargate but also we need to think about what effect they would have on the game and how rules will work with them.
Freeman

That's a good point, we've not encountered shields in stargate before have we?
Woody

Not shield like that anyway
Harry Font

i have the scar on the top of my head from an old wooden shield with no lagging.

Some normal rubber/plastic bin lids make ace sheilds.

Yes that is true "Shards safe" was a term we grew to enjoy...Like the fire breathing Genine and that time with the rocket fight. Looking back im amazed we spent less time in the hospital than on site Very Happy
Broz

Easy enough to make one. Perspex or other plastic material, bolt on velcro or fastex based arm strap. Then bolt an adhesive trowel or similar for a handle (good broad, flat base with a nice tough handle, you can find them at any DIY store. Don't pay any more than £6 for one.)
Admin-Rob

Perspex is too brittle, without scoring to make a clean break, I've seen it shatter in nasty ways that just isn't right for LRP kit (IMHO)
Broz

Lexan then, whatever is appropriate. Having used them made in this exact way in airsoft I can say they are definatly fun.
Colour Sargent Rob Knight

Would they count as Kevlar shields then, the sort of thing Armed police use.
Admin-Rob

Lexan I think is what the things are actually made from, so you should be OK from there on Broz.

As for counting as a kevlar shield?
I dont' know as we've not had shields used in that manner in stargate
Broz

Personnally i'd rather go for a heavy opaque style that actually looks like a proper balistic shield. Be nice to have a couple for hostile gatings.

Still, the talk of transparent shields did get me thinking about things like energy shields a la Halo's Jackal.
The Kibble

still not got the question of what does a shield do?
+ 2 vitality and sacrifice against a critical?

Or something else?
Freeman

Now have the shield.
Am making it 'safe' (well edging it in pipe lagging and gluing foam over the outer bolts.

"+2 vit / discard against critical hit" seems not unreasonable (with a rule 7 caveat that you don't get the +2 if attacked from behind)
