Linguistics - a query

Is there any mechanic in the system whereby people can indicate that they are speaking in another language without OOC knowing and speaking that language.

eg.
Freeman and Rei wish to discuss something without those around knowing, so switch to talking in Japanese. OOC we'd still be speaking in English because I don't know enough Japanese to hold a conversation, and I dont know if Jen does or not, but how do we signal this to the other players?

'An Evening of Science and Mystery' had a fun way of doing that but using that in Stargate may take some seriousness out of what goes on.

No I dont know that much Japanese. Only a few basic lines/words. I did buy one of those learn at home tapes once but gave up after chapter one...lol.

Prehaps we could pass notes...lol that way no one else knows what were saying.

Oh and can you let me know exactly what languages you have. I know you said the set before but I cant remember. I suck I know.

Notes could work, but would be slow for conversational purposes.

What EoSaM used was what they termed 'del-boy lianguages' where the speaker would say a (often joked) word from the foreign language, say the scentence with a suitable accent/voice, then close with another pseudo foreign word

For example someone wishing to speak in Goa'uld could say:
Hilk'sha. If you lay down your weapons, your lives will be spared. Kree

it's one way around the problem...

Could work but then again it would depend on the reasons Y you want to be speaking the language (OC) and how much you trust people to not use (OC) info (IC).

Like if the reason you want to use the other language is simply because it sounds cool and (IC) you can and it doesnt matter you could use any method to suggest you are speaking another language.

But if the reason you wan to be speaking the other language is so other characters dont hear and use/pass on the info it does depend on peoples ability to keep (IC) and pretend they didnt hear. If we are discussing some important plot information for example Id assume its important, on the other hand if we are simply chatting about what we thought of dinner the night before then it doesnt matter.

Now I not trying to start something here by saying people cheat or something so before anyone goes all funny over this Im not. But missunderstandings happen and if there is an important reason for the info to be passed in a language other than that everyone can understand

(which is Y I assume we are discussing this, after all if it didnt matter then Y bring it up) then you want a full proof method that everyone in earshot will know you are speaking a different language. I mean what if they come in mid conversation and dont realise?

Really I dont mind but Im just trying to see the whole picture and discuss different points of view.

I think that the basic idea is to indicate the use of another language.  It did have a comedic feel at ESaM But was meant to, and no-one to my recollection cheated by hearing something they shouldn't.

It could add some nice flavour, and allow people to interact with someone speaking in foreign tongues, but I would guess that if you have something yu really dont want the other players to hear you would take the person it is intended for off to one side out of earshot.

I can see this being useful in first contact situations, for example:-

Player one :- Anyone speak Jaffa?  Tell them we come in peace?
Player two :- I do, Jaffa, don't shoot or we will kill you, Kree!
Player one :- Good job, now lets see what they do

Or something similar, lol.

i know im not a linguistics person but i see where your coming from on this.
if you use the psudo word at the start and end or every sentence it would be pretty difficult to come in mid conversation without very quickly realising?
i dunno if this requires an actual rules call or if its something us as players should just formulate a way around?
any other ideas apart from psudowords?
will x

Konnichiwa! Smile

Well like I said Im not really all that bothered on what exactly the ruling is in the end. I think your use of a word before or after what your saying would be fine to indicate language use. I just needed to clarify for what reason you were asking in the first place. I was wondering if there was any specific reason why you'd asked after this event is all. The trick is now to find out (IC) who speaks what. Smile

I've used the 'keyword at the beginning of a sentence' approach in another system and it worked without serious issues.  I'd suggest using that as it will be familiar to a number of players and is pretty easy to get used to.

As for OOC, knowledge, I trust our players not to metagame with info they overhear.
