Event 13 - Alternative to camping.Heyas
Mark at Candleston tells me that they have a number of Mongolian Yerts for hire. There are 4 medium yerts that sleep 4-5 and a large that sleeps 12. Each one has a wood burning stove inside and is priced at £100 to £150 for the weekend per yert. They are private hire and I have a contact number if you want to book one for event 13.
I will be receiving more details including photographs at the end of this month, and I will post them up for any interested parties. In the mean time you can view them on the candleston facebook group.

Holy Drokk. I thought when I heard they were building these that they were looking at improving the facilities for the site not looking to further line their pockets. Especially as they were asking for volunteers to help put them up a couple of weeks ago.

A 100 pound for that? It looks like a big tent. That's like asking people to pay extra for access to huts at sites such as Barnswood or any other site we've been at that isn't Candlestone.
I'll be happy enough in my tent or even my bivvy bag under the stars.

Well other places are doing it Skian Mohr for example.
So I guess they`re just getting on the band wagon.

Larphotel do it a Maelstrom, so I see no harm here. Besides those yurts look expensive and they need to get their money back.
It's an option, you don't have to take it.
Personally, as Steve won't be able to come to this event will prefer to have my own 'ickle' tent, as I rather like it and it's already paid for.

Yeah Larphotel is run by Skian Mohr and probably works out more expensive as I think its per head. It was more the fact that they asked for the LRP communitys help in putting them up, just so they can charge for use. Seems a bit exploitive. If it helps pay for the running and maintaining of the site thats all to the good and as you say no one is obliged to hire them, it just smacks at profiteering to me. And yes Yurts arent cheap. You are looking at £3k+ each

LRP hotel is £150 for the whole tent or £40 each whichever you want to do, its alot easyer than mucking about putting a tent up and taking one on public transport, but when you consider that they have to pay PD and lug all the gear back to scotland I think its reasonable.
Considering the Yurts will be fixed, and on their own ground it might not be as excusable.
Having said that a local B&B would easily cost £25+ a night so over a 4 day event its £100 for one person.
But at the end of the day, since stargate is a modern system and modern Civi Tents start at £15 each, so thats what im doing.

All camp sites charge for the use of the structures on them one way or another, they have to to cover the cost of construction. Having said that I can't help feeling that Mark might have scored an own goal in the PR department when most sites offer wood or brick buildings costing many times what the yurts do, with fitted kitchens & so on & accommodating twenty or thirty people as opposed to 12 for a similar price.
I think I'll stick with the canvas palace.
